Mega Evolution—Perfect Order: First Impressions Before It Drops

Mega Evolution—Perfect Order hits shelves March 27, with prereleases already underway since March 14 at local stores. Some collectors are posting their early pulls. This is the second set in the current Mega Evolution series after Ascended Heroes in January. It puts Mega Zygarde ex front and center, with some nods back to Pokémon Legends: Z-A that dropped last October.

The set clocks in at around 124 cards. Smaller than a lot of recent expansions, which I like. It keeps things focused, less chance of the good stuff getting lost in filler.

I’ve got two Elite Trainer Boxes pre-ordered for my kids at our LCS in Mount Holly. We’re waiting for the full release to crack them together. No prerelease events for me this time, but I’m looking forward to seeing what shows up in those packs.

Mega Zygarde ex is the obvious headliner. Zygarde’s forme-shifting thing always caught my eye back in the day. The Z-A tie-in gives it a bit more depth than your average mascot card. If the illustration rare looks clean, it might be one I keep pulling out to check on months from now.

Meowth ex has me interested too. How could you not? It’s got that crafty vibe, and the set’s Lumiose City theme plays into it well. Rowlet is another one that stands out for me. It’s just a solid, cute design without trying too hard. Collectors who appreciate the smaller, understated cards know what I mean.

The new Megas like Mega Clefable ex and Mega Starmie ex aren’t the usual big names. That’s fine by me. It reminds me of how some of the less hyped vintage Megas from the XY era ended up being favorites over time. Speaking of which, the Lumiose City trainer card art in this set pulls me right back to playing Pokémon X and Y when they came out in October 2013. Those games were my first real deep dive into Kalos, and seeing that city vibe again feels familiar in a good way.

Trainers and stadiums look decent too. Rosa’s Encouragement with Serperior synergy could see some casual play, and Lumiose City might slot into a few decks I tinker with at home. Not every card needs to be a chase. The ones that round out a collection and make it feel complete are just as important.

Products are the standard mix: booster boxes, ETBs, Build & Battle kits for prerelease. Nothing out of left field announced, but with the 30th anniversary still rolling this year, I wouldn’t be surprised if a couple promo things drop later.

This set isn’t trying to change the game, but it has enough pieces that line up with how I collect. Mixing vintage and modern means I like when new stuff echoes the old without copying it. I’ll open those ETBs with the kids and post whatever actually hits our way. Could be a sleeper card in there that ends up mattering more than the big ones.
